Learn how to stop Torx bit cam-out and stripping. Our diagnosis guide covers causes, corrective actions, and when to upgrade to high-molybdenum bits for impact drivers.

Quick answer

Torx bit stripping usually happens when the bit is too soft for the fastener or when debris blocks full engagement. Switch to an impact-rated, high-molybdenum bit and always clean the screw head before driving.

Why Torx bits strip more than you expect

Torx bits are designed to reduce cam-out compared to Phillips or slotted drives, but they still strip when the bit material is too soft or the fit is too loose. A common cause is using a standard steel bit on hardened stainless or structural screws, which can round the bit lobes.

Another overlooked factor is debris in the screw head. Even a tiny metal shaving or paint chip prevents the bit from seating fully, causing the bit to ride on the lobe tips rather than the full face. That concentrated force accelerates wear and leads to stripping.

When to upgrade your Torx bits

If you regularly drive screws with an impact driver or into hard materials like steel studs or thick hardwood, standard bits will wear quickly. Upgrading to bits made from a higher-grade steel, such as hi-molybdenum super M7+, provides better heat resistance and hardness.

The Drill Hog T-25 and T-27 Torx bits are made from hi-molybdenum super M7+, which has a melting point of 4,753°F. That extreme heat tolerance means the bit holds its shape even after repeated impact cycles, reducing the chance of stripping.

Torx bit stripping diagnosis

  • Symptom: The bit slips or rounds off inside the screw head, especially under high torque or impact driving. You may see metal dust or hear a clicking sound.
  • Likely cause: Soft bit material (standard steel) cannot handle the torque or heat. Alternatively, debris in the screw head prevents full bit engagement. Check the screw head with a flashlight. If debris is visible, clean it with compressed air or a pick before driving.
  • Corrective action: Switch to an impact-rated Torx bit made from hi-molybdenum super M7+ steel. Ensure the bit size matches the screw (e.g., T-25 for T-25 screws). Apply firm, steady pressure to keep the bit fully seated. After the first few drives, inspect the bit lobes. If they show rounding, replace the bit immediately to avoid damaging the screw.
  • Stop or choose another option: If the bit still strips after switching to a high-molybdenum bit and cleaning the screw head, the fastener may be undersized or the material may be too hard for any Torx bit. In that case, drill out the screw or use a screw extractor. Do not continue driving a stripped screw—you will damage the driver and bit further. Stop and change your approach.

Torx bits that resist stripping

  • T-25 Torx Bit Hi-Molybdenum Super M7+ Drill Hog® 10 Pack: Drill Hog T-25 Torx Bit Hi-Molybdenum Super M7+ 10 Pack is impact rated with a melting point of 4,753°F. The high melting point and impact rating mean the bit maintains its shape under heavy use, reducing cam-out and stripping on stubborn fasteners.

  • T-27 Torx Bit Hi-Molybdenum Super M7+ Drill Hog® 10 Pack: Drill Hog T-27 Torx Bit Hi-Molybdenum Super M7+ 10 Pack is also impact rated with the same high-temperature steel. If your fasteners use T-27 heads, this bit gives the same stripping resistance as the T-25, so you can match the right size without compromising durability.
