Learn how to safely and effectively cut wood with a mini circular saw blade on a Dremel or die grinder. Step-by-step instructions and product tips.

Quick answer

Use a mini circular saw blade with a 1/4" arbor and anti-kickback design, mounted on a Dremel or die grinder, to cut wood precisely and safely.

Why a mini saw blade instead of a cut-off wheel

Standard cut-off wheels are designed for metal and can bind or shatter when cutting wood, especially thicker pieces. A mini circular saw blade with teeth (like the Drill Hog set) cuts wood fibers cleanly and reduces the risk of kickback. The trade-off is that these blades are not suitable for metal or masonry.

How to cut wood with a mini circular saw blade on a Dremel or die grinder

  1. Choose the right blade size: Select a blade that is slightly larger than the thickness of the wood. For example, use the 1-1/4" blade for 1/4" plywood or the 2" blade for 3/4" stock. Check the blade diameter against your material thickness before mounting.
  2. Mount the blade securely: Insert the mandrel (1/8" shank) into your Dremel or die grinder collet. Tighten the collet nut firmly. Slide the blade onto the mandrel so the arbor hole (1/4") fits snugly, then tighten the arbor screw. A loose blade can wobble and cause dangerous kickback.
  3. Set the tool speed to 7,000 RPM or lower: Most Dremel tools have a variable speed dial. Set it to the lowest speed that still cuts (around 7,000 RPM for wood). Faster speeds can burn the wood or cause the blade to grab. If the wood starts smoking, reduce the speed immediately.
  4. Make a shallow scoring pass first: Hold the tool at a 90° angle to the workpiece. Gently lower the spinning blade into the wood, letting the teeth do the work. Do not force the cut. Make a shallow pass (1/8" deep) to establish a groove. Forcing the blade can cause it to bind and kick back toward you.
  5. Complete the cut with steady, light pressure: Follow the scored line, moving the tool forward at a slow, consistent pace. Let the blade pull itself through the wood. Stop frequently to clear dust from the cut line. Never lift the tool while the blade is still spinning—wait for it to stop.
